When the University of the South planned the development of a Wellness and Recreation Commons on central campus, it was on the site of the University’s current bookstore. Sewanee set out with a vision for a new bookstore that will anchor downtown’s new revitalization project. This project will be an important anchor for a renewed Sewanee Village. The University enlisted the expertise of WBA to design a bookstore that would serve as more than just a place to buy textbooks. The slated design lends itself as a place of welcome. Featuring lots of natural light melded with a quaint feel, the new bookstore is positioned to become a permanent feature in the life and legacy of Sewanee.
The new University bookstore will be appointed with stacks for both commercial and textbooks; a living room, serving as a venue for relaxing or public events such as book signings or intimate concerts; a Tiger Spirit Shop for Sewanee-branded merchandise, snacks, and supplies; and places for students and the community to gather, including a patio with a fireplace and a front porch.
